Mt Kenya trek -Naro moru - Naro moru Route (5 day)

 

Around Shipton's Camp

 

This is most popular of all the routes that lead up to the park areas. It is the steepest and the fastest way up the mountain and ascends the mountain from the west. The route is not particularly scenic but has some of the best tourist accommodations. Most climbers begin hiking at the park gate, although it is possible to drive a vehicle as far as the Met station (3050 metres). Among the challenges in this route include the vertical bog and the extremely steep trail on looses gravel while going up to Point Lenana.

 

Day 1:

 

Depart Nairobi at 8am and transfer to Naru moru town for lunch. After lunch proceed to the Naru moru park gate. From here, hike on a wide dirt road through the dense forest up to the Met station Lodge. ( 3,200m)

 

Day 2:

 

A short walk to the end of the forest line from where you hike across the marshy vertical bog of the lower moorlands. Picnic lunch at the picnic Rocks before continuing further to Mackinder`s camp ( 4,300m) gaining 1,300m in altitude in about 5 hours.

 

Day 3:

 

After breakfast ascend to Austrian hut ( 4,720m) for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 4:

 

Leave at 0300hrs for predawn attempt, trekking for 1 hour across bare rock and scree slopes characteristic of the alpine region up to Pt Lenana ( 4985m, the hiker`s summit, arriving in time to catch the African sunrise. Descend back Austrian hut for full breakfast. After breakfast descend further to Met station for for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 5:

 

After an early morning breakfast, descend for 3 hours to the Naru moru park gate to catch a vehicle for return journey back to Nairobi arriving by 1700hrs.
